The Swan & Railway is delighted to have been named Wigan CAMRA Pub of the Year, marking a well-deserved victory after being runner-up in previous years. The prestigious award, presented by the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) Wigan branch, recognises excellence in real ale quality, consistency, atmosphere, and community engagement. This win is a proud moment for the pub and its loyal customers.

“To win Wigan CAMRA Pub of the Year after being runner-up for a few years makes is incredibly special for us. We’re absolutely delighted and grateful to our great team, all our loyal customers, who come from all over the country, and everyone who has supported us year after year.”
CAMRA judges praised the pub for its outstanding range of well-kept real ales, welcoming atmosphere, commitment to maintaining high standards and being a real asset to the Wigan community. The award reflects the dedication of the team behind the bar and the strong support of the local community.
Looking ahead, Landlady Shelley Wright added:
“We’re also keeping our fingers crossed that our sister pub, The Woodman, may be named Birmingham CAMRA Pub of the Year. It would be fantastic to meet them in the regional rounds and, hopefully, go on to compete together at national level.”

“I am thrilled that The Swan & Railway has been named Wigan CAMRA Pub of the Year. I reopened this beautiful historic pub in 2019 and was determined to put it back at the heart of the town, restored respectfully to its historic features, offering a real pub welcome to all and of course serving cracking real ale.
Our restoration won the Historic England conservation category in The CAMRA National pub design awards in 2020 which is the blue ribband for pub conservation.
And now winning this award recognises the care we’ve put into this pub making it, we hope, truly a standout for the Wigan area
I believe we must never lose sight of the fact that pubs are about people, winning this award and the support we’ve had from the people of Wigan just confirms that for me, beltin as they say round here!”
The win places The Swan & Railway amongst the region’s finest real ale pubs and may see it go forward for further CAMRA honours.
Celebrations are planned at the pub, date T.B.C., with locals and visitors invited to raise a glass with us to mark the success.
